What bundling actually removes

A separate supplier, a separate bill, and the whole category of problems that come from the site and the hosting being managed by different people who each believe the other is responsible.

It also removes the maintenance. Security patching, server updates, certificate renewal and capacity are all handled, which is genuinely valuable because in most small businesses nobody was doing them.

And it removes a failure mode. A site that goes down because a hosting bill went to a former employee's address is a real and surprisingly common way for a small business to lose its website.

What is usually still separate

Email, frequently. Hosting a site and running business email are different services, and a builder that includes the first rarely includes the second in any usable form.

And anything above a limit. Storage, bandwidth and sometimes the number of pages are capped on lower plans, which matters for image-heavy sites more than owners expect.

Questions that prevent surprises

Ask what happens when you exceed a limit: whether the site slows, stops, or you are simply billed. The three outcomes are very different and the answer is rarely on the pricing page.

Ask what the price is in year two. Introductory rates are common in this market and the renewal figure is the real one you will be paying for as long as the site exists.

And ask what happens if you stop paying. Whether the site is archived, deleted or held for a period decides how much notice a lapsed payment gives you.

What to check before committing

The list below covers the things that turn out to matter later. None of them is difficult to ask about and all of them are awkward to discover afterward.

• Whether the domain is separate and in your name
• What the renewal price is after the first year
• Storage, bandwidth and page limits on your plan
• Whether a secure certificate is included and automatic
• Whether backups exist and how far back they go
• What happens to the site if payment lapses
• Whether business email is included or separate

Certificates and security

Check it covers your custom domain rather than only their default address. That gap is the one that produces a browser warning on the day you attach your own domain.

Backups are the other half. Ask whether they exist, how far back they go, and whether you can restore one yourself or have to ask somebody.

Performance and where it is served

Included hosting is usually served from a distributed network, which is generally faster than a single cheap server and removes a whole class of speed problems.

Test a published page on a phone rather than trusting a claim, since a crawler or an answer engine fetches it the same way. That single measurement tells you more than any description of the infrastructure behind it.

The dependency, stated plainly

Bundled hosting means the site and the service are the same thing. Leaving means rebuilding somewhere else rather than pointing a domain at a new server.

Keep your own copy of the words and the original photographs regardless. A folder holding those is cheap insurance and it makes any future move an inconvenience rather than a loss.
