AI search and traditional search
Traditional search returns a list of pages and lets you choose. AI search reads those pages and writes an answer. The underlying work of being findable is largely the same, and the way success is measured is not.

Short answer
Traditional search returns ranked links for a person to evaluate. AI search reads sources and composes a written answer, sometimes naming them. The work of being crawlable, clear and trustworthy serves both. What changes is that visibility can happen without a visit, so being the cited source becomes valuable in itself.
A traditional result page matches a query to documents and ranks them. The judgment about which one answers the question belongs to the person reading, and the click is how that judgment gets expressed.
An answer engine does that judgment itself. It gathers passages, weighs them, and writes a reply in its own words. The reader may never see the pages involved, and often only sees the names of a few of them.
Everything before that step is shared. Both need to reach your page, parse it, and understand it. Our page on how answer engines read a site covers the stages, and most of them apply to crawlers too.
Reachability. A page blocked in the robots file, hidden behind a login or answering with an error is invisible to both. This is still the most common reason a page gets no attention from anything at all.
Clarity of structure. One main heading, ordered levels, real lists and descriptive link wording help a ranking system and a reading system identically. There is no version of this work that serves only one of them.
Speed and mobile behavior. Slow pages get crawled less and read less. Our page on page experience measures covers what to check and in what order.
Measurement is the biggest shift. There is no position to track and no report showing which answers named you. Anyone offering a rank tracker for AI answers is selling a number that does not exist in any stable form.
The value of a click changes too. Simple factual questions increasingly end without one. Questions that end in hiring somebody do not, because a person still has to choose and contact a business.
And the unit of content shifts from the page to the passage. A page can be excellent overall and still contribute nothing, because no single passage inside it stood alone well enough to be useful.
Not much, and the few changes are cheap. Each item below is a habit rather than a project, and all of them improve the page for human readers as well, which is why they are safe to adopt without waiting.
Some sites will see fewer visits for questions that can be answered in a sentence. That is a real effect and pretending otherwise helps nobody. The pages most exposed are the ones answering simple definitional questions.
The pages least exposed are the ones tied to a decision. Nobody hires a plumber from a summary. They read, compare, and contact. For a local business the commercially valuable half of search is largely intact.
The sensible response is not to withhold answers. A site that hides its knowledge is skipped by everything and trusted by nobody. Be the source that gets named, and make the route to contacting you obvious.
Occasionally an answer will state something about your business that is out of date or simply wrong, drawn from an old page or a stale directory. There is no correction form, which makes prevention the only real remedy.
Prevention means removing the stale sources you control and making the current facts unmistakable on your own site. The page on entity clarity covers how to state identity so it cannot be confused.
It also means keeping your own house in order. Contradictions between your pages are the easiest thing for a reading system to find, and the easiest thing for you to remove in an afternoon.
Spend the great majority of your time on work that serves both. Structure, speed, honest writing, pages that answer one question each. That is the shared foundation and it is where almost all the return is.
Spend a little on the additions. An answer block at the top of each page, markup that names the page, a review date, and a source next to every figure. Together these are an afternoon on a small site.
Spend nothing chasing a position in an answer. There is no lever, no submission and no schedule. Build material that deserves to be chosen and let the measurement be readiness rather than rank.
No. The work of being reachable, clear, fast and trustworthy is the same work, and it now serves two audiences instead of one. What has changed is the measurement and the assumption that visibility always produces a visit.
Not reliably. Answers vary between people and change over time, so any single reply is a sample rather than a score. Sampling the questions your customers ask is useful directionally. Treat any tool promising a rank with suspicion.
No. Withholding information means nothing cites you and readers find a more helpful competitor. The stronger position is to answer plainly, be the named source, and make contacting you the obvious next step.
Pages answering short factual questions that need no judgment. Pages tied to hiring, buying or a local decision are far less exposed, because a person still has to choose a business and make contact.
